About the course
Safeguarding Families is a structured pre-marital counselling course developed by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) in partnership with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The course responds to the rising cases of domestic and sexual violence, marital conflict, and divorce—particularly among newly married couples. Reports indicate that a significant number of survivors experience domestic violence within the early months of marriage, highlighting the urgent need for proper preparation, education, and support before and during marriage.
This programme equips intending couples and religious marriage counsellors with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to build healthy, respectful, and non-violent unions. It addresses key issues such as conflict prevention, understanding marital responsibilities, responding appropriately to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), and promoting informed decision-making during courtship and marriage.
The course consists of 10 compulsory modules (with Module 8 – Legal, Policy and Religious Frameworks – having no assessment). Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate.
Safeguarding Families is designed to strengthen marriages, protect individuals, and promote safer homes and communities.
